Historical and Practical Information

The 61st Street Fishing Pier, located in Galveston, Texas, is a renowned fishing destination on the Gulf Coast, attracting anglers from all over the region. This pier has been a staple of Galveston’s recreational offerings since its construction in the early 1960s. It provides a unique opportunity for both casual and serious fishermen to enjoy deep water fishing without the need for a boat.

Originally built to enhance Galveston’s appeal as a tourist destination, the pier extends into the Gulf of Mexico, offering excellent access to deep-sea species. Over the years, the 61st Street Fishing Pier has seen several reconstructions, most notably after significant damage from hurricanes that occasionally impact the Gulf Coast.  In 2008, the pier was destroyed when the Hurricane Ike hit the Island’s beachfront, but has been rebuilt in 2010.  Tropical Storm Beta hit the pier in 2020 and dislodged the T-head structure. In 2021, strong winds and waves caused by Tropical Storm Nicolas again damaged the T-head and completely ripped it away, forcing the pier to close. Luckily the pier had insurance and after a $50,000 deductible was able to raise enough money to again repair the pier!   The pier is open and they are catching a ton of fish.
